Rising Stars Ratings (Don't forget to vote !):

We asked Stephen Kelly from the ‘Raglans’ 5 questions when they entered the 2011 Rising Stars…
Q1. Where are you from?
In and around Dublin, we won’t get too specific
Q2. Musical influences?
So much stuff, for me: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Noel Gallagher, Stones, The Boss, Stone Roses!
Liam’s been really plugging The Tallest Man on Earth lately and I know Conn’s a huge fan of the Gaslight Anthem. Rhos is still trying to get us to cover Party in the USA, bit of a tune in fairness! Some of the lads were in a metal band before. But now we use a mandolin?
Q3. What’s your song writing process?
So far it’s been a case of me writing the bones of a song and I bring it to the lads as a little baby skeleton and they get their lab coats on and start fleshing this little deformed baby out until it’s transformed into a fleshy beautiful being which we all hold and nurture
Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?
Some people must have been used to seeing the lads in an old metal band so when we were playing’ a nice folky number at a gig and they were crowd surfing and throwing each other around. Going absolutely mental. I dunno if that says more about our tunes or the people who listen to them.
Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?
The lads won’t be happy with my answer but it has to be Ice Cube! (“IT’S NOT FOR THE POP CHARTS”)
A brief history in their own words…
Raglans are Stephen Kelly: lead vocal, guitar, banjo & mandolin, Rhos Horan: bass and backing vocals, Conn O’Runaidh: drums and backing vocals and Liam Morrow: lead guitar, mandolin and backing vocals.
The band was formed in the summer of last year in the Knockanstockan camping dome by Stephen Kelly who had been touring, recording and writing with a number of a folk / indie partners under the name ‘The Raglans’ for three years. He met Rhos Horan in a hazy dome session and they agreed to continue the ‘raglans’ name.
Their sold out Whelans show in December was shot by Oran Bambrick and can be seen cut to their single ‘Down’.
They are currently playing a series of shows around Ireland while recording in between gigs with producer Lee Boylan, (from the band ‘Fight Like Apes’).
The Raglans have an existing following in the UK and Ireland mainly gained through touring both countries extensively over the last three years as support to the likes of Midge Ure, Glen Tilbrook, Cathy Davey, John Isley of Dire Straits and Gavan Glass,
