Sive – Sunkissed

Q1. Where are you from?

I’m from Kildare but living in Dublin, Mark (guitar) is from Kildare, Paddy (drums) is from Dublin and Eoin (bass) is from Wexford.

Q2. Musical influences?

We have a really wide range of influences and we’re all inspired by different types of music including Radiohead, Feist, PJ Harvey, Jeff Buckley and Tori Amos to name a few.

Q3. What’s your song writing process?

It really varies from time to time. Sometimes it takes me weeks and weeks to write a song and sometimes (but very rarely) it only takes a couple of hours. Once the song is finished I’ll bring it to the band and we’ll work on it. Sometimes I’ll have a bassline or something written beforehand, but usually I like to let the band do their own thing with the songs. It’s always nice to have the band’s input because we’ve all got a different approach, so it’s interesting to see where the song will end up when we put our ideas together.

Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?

We played at a charity gig a while ago and the organisers gave us each a pair of boxing gloves to thank us for playing. That was a bit mental!

Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?

There are so many! But I’d love to play on Jools Holland – I’d be happy to share the stage with anyone if we could perform on that show!

In their own words

Sive is the moniker of songwriter and musician Sadhbh O’Sullivan.

Sadhbh grew up in Naas, Co Kildare and spent most of her teenage years playing guitar and bass in various bands. Having finished school, she obtained a place at Ballyfermot Rock School where she began to sing and perform her own compositions. This gave her the opportunity to take part in an exchange program in The Netherlands, so in September 2008 she moved to Tilburg and formed a band with a group of Dutch musicians. They rehearsed together for a few months, playing shows in a number of venues around the area.

In 2009 Sadhbh returned to Ireland, determined to establish herself on the Irish music scene. She recruited some new musicians including 2 fellow Ballyfermot graduates; bassist Eoin Hartwieg and drummer Patrick Hopkins, and jazz guitarist Mark Dudley. In the year that followed they became a regular fixture in Dublin’s live venues. They also secured themselves a slot at the Temple House Festival in Sligo, opened for a number of renowned acts including Kila and Gemma Hayes, made a few radio appearances and had a track featured on “Brand New Day”; a compilation album in aid of Suicide or Survive.

Having spent 2010 hard at work on the live circuit, Sadhbh and her band have steadily begun to build themselves a fan base. Her vocals and songwriting style have been described as “pure and authentic”, while the band’s live performances have been referred to as “prog rock without the ego”. 2011 so far has seen Sadhbh return to The Netherlands for a tour and begin work on her debut album, which will be released in the autumn.

Sadhbh has assembled a resolute bunch of musicians who play her songs in an intricate, compelling fashion. Combine these with the multi-instrumentalism of the talented Ms O’Sullivan, and you have what is going to be one hell of a show.” – Leinster Leader

‘We all got born, got freaked and got music’

The Altered Hours were formed in the summer 2009. They are a five piece band based in Cork City. They have a very ‘Psychedelic Folk’ sound ranging from garage 60′s pop to modern shoegaze. Although never losing sight of the values of a good song, their psychedelic guitar sounds create an altered world for the songs to strive on. The drums and bass are played with power and percision and the vocals mingle with strong harmonies within their big sound.

Since their formation, The Altered Hours have played all over the country – including The Village(Dublin), The Pavillion(Cork), Bakers Place(Limerick),The Crane Lane(Cork), Roisin Dubh(Galway), Emmet’s(Mayo),The Quad(Cork), The Sugar Club(Dublin).

They are currently working on their debut EP and will be announcing its release date in May 2011.

The Stoney Brokes – You Don’t See Me

Q1. Where are you from?

We all come from Tallaght in Dublin

Q2. Musical influences?

Oh there’s too many to mention them all, we have big influence from the big songwriters of the last few generations, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Bob Dylan.

Q3. What’s your song writing process?

Well in a sense we write the songs together in the way that somebody would write a song and bring it to the band and we’d all chop and change it and arrange it together and what we leave with is never even slightly resembling what came in.

Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?

When playing a gig in Tallaght we had filled the place so that you couldn’t move and the energy was so intense that at the end of the set everyone got up on stage with us and started dancing and we blew a bass amp and a guitar amp.

Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?

We’d probably share the stage with The Beatles and Led Zeppelin so that we could all die happy.

In their own words

The Stoney Brokes are a life force of 5 like-minded friends with a passion for making a unique style of music. Coming from influences such as The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and other bright sounds of the 60’s and 70’s along with some darker undertones they are known for their energetic live shows and catchy songs. This act are a must see. The Stoney Brokes Self Titled Ep will be released in October this year.

Sal Vitro – Casanova

Q1. Where are you from?

Sal Vitro originate from the rock, blues, soul and funk capitals of Dublin and Kildare, namely Dundrum and Naas!

Q2. Musical influences?

The band have many influences spanning several different genres. These include;

The Stone Roses, Led Zeppelin, Rory Gallagher, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Band, Pink Floyd, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Dr John, James Booker, Ten Years After, Cream, Eric Clapton, The Smiths, Howlin Wolf, Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones, Willie Dixon, Jefferson Airplane, Joni Mitchell, Fleet Foxes, Neil Young, Crosby Stills Nash, Stevie Wonder, Paul Weller, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Kasabian, The La’s, Colm Lynch, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley, Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert Johnson, BB King, Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed, Big Bill Broonzy, Little Walter, Kokomo Arnold, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Squire, Ian Brown, Jimmy Page, Dave Brubeck , Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Meters, Ian Shaw and many many more.

Q3. What’s your song writing process?

Sal Vitro has no set song writing process as such. Each band member prides themselves on being very intuitive and reactive musicians and as a result the seeds of many songs are sown while jamming, with the band feeding off one another’s ideas. When a groove, riff, melody or mood is found that feels right the band then work extremely hard at crafting a more solid arrangement that keeps this fresh and funky sound.

Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?

Without doubt the most bizarre gig we have ever played took place in Dublin in December 2010. The gig was going great and the crowd was rocking as we came to the pinnacle of the show when suddenly a husky, bearded, middle-aged gentleman jumped up on stage wearing nothing but a pair of slacks, loafers and a cowboy hat! Needless to say, after this lyrics may have forgotten and chords changes may have been missed but this topless, jiving old man definitely made it one to remember! We’re considering hiring him on a full time basis now………….

Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?

Sal Vitro would love to share a stage with The Who in the early 1970’s, simply because we all love the band and that was probably the point when they were at their peak. It’s a measure of The Who that they always seemed to sound better live then they did on recordings, and the level of musical and physical aggression in their live shows is something Sal Vitro both admire and strive for.

In their own words

Sal Vitro (formerly known as Roadrunner) are a no-nonsense rock outfit from Dublin “who capture the essence of rhythm and blues with a funk edge”.

As Roadrunner their first single ‘Sparks’ was chosen to be part of the compilation album ‘Ourspace’, released by the Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education. The album reached #5 in the Irish Album Charts with Jackie Hayden of Hotpress Magazine noting their contribution as “a stand out track”.

Roadrunner later released their first EP, ‘Try Keep Up’. Jackie Hayden again praised the group and gave the EP a very positive review in the November edition of Hotpress.

The band was selected from hundreds of applicants to compete in the final heats of the prestigious JD Set, run by Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers, in 2009.

With the addition of John Cuddy on drums in 2010 Roadrunner became Sal Vitro and enjoyed instant success. In their very first gig, Sal Vitro impressed judges and fans alike and won the Live and Unsigned Battle of the Bands.

The band has since also won the Hard Rock Cafe National Battle of the Bands and will now go on to represent Ireland in the global leg of the competition. Sal Vitro are now set to appear both on a new Irish music television show to be aired across 4 channels as well as on several radio shows in 2011.

Sal Vitro’s much anticipated debut EP will be released in April 2011 and the band is currently working on their debut album which is set for release in the summer of 2011.

There is simply some stuff that leaves you mesmerised when you hear it.’ – Music Review Unsigned
