Dave Morrissey – Bring Out The Light

Q1. Where are you from?

Mountmellick,Co.Laois

Q2. Musical influences?

Paul Weller,Jack Johnson,Pink Floyd,The 4 Of Us,Kt Tunstall,Cold Play.

Q3. What’s your song writing process?

I generally just sit back with the guitar and find one chord that resonates and build from there to form the melody in to a progression and usually, I have the lyrical idea already in my mind before the music. I also like to write alot of ideas down and then go back to them and piece them together with the guitar.

Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?

I did a gig in Prague some years back for the ‘Jameson Irish Music Festival’ and while sitting at the bar before the gig, a camera crew from the UK arrived in for a beer and after a quick chat, they decided to record the gig! Within a half hour they had the crowd really stirred up and cameras everywhere and the gig was just amazing! Unexpected but thats the biz.

Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?

It would have to be KT Tunstall right now as I just love her stage presence and I think we could manage a pretty good duet song!

Madra – They’ll Chase You Down

Q1. Where are you from?

We are from Lucan and Cabinteely, located somewhere in the giant housing estate that is Dublin!

Q2. Musical influences?

Well all members of the band have so many different influence’s and with so much good music from the past its hard to narrow it down to a few, but in a nutshell: U2, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Blur, The Foo fighters, Nirvana, The National, Led Zeppelin, Kila, The Kinks, Muse, Ocean Colour Scene, Elvis Presley, Rory Gallagher, Frank Zappa, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the list goes on and on and on……………………………………………

Q3. What’s your song writing process?

The band may have changed but the song writing is the same!!!!! Noel writes most of the lyrics and guitar riffs but other members of the band also contribute with lyrics, riffs, fills and melodies. However the most important part of the song writing process is that when an idea is brought to the band everyone contributes and while this may sometimes change the idea it ultimately becomes a Madra song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?

We played a gig in the legal eagle on the same night Ireland played England in a rugby match at Croke Park in 2007. It was one of those gigs where loads of bands play in 3 or 4 areas in the one venue. Anyhow we were supposed to be on early but ended up being moved around twice before playing 5 hours late in a room the size of my kitchen!!! We were so drunk at that stage that the only part of the night we remember is Noel the guitarist spinning around on the floor like Homer Simpson and running out of the room when the gig eventually collapsed.

Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?

Anybody along the lines of Paul McCartney, Phil Lynott, Dave Grohl, Damon Alburn as they are all great musicians and I would love to have a drum battle with Dave Grohl!!!!!!!!!!

In their own words

Madra are a Rock ‘n’ Roll band from Dublin who formed in late 2006.

Originally a four-piece, we have since evolved into a more intense, tight and solid three-piece. Recently our bassist departed and Mark Phelan has come in to fill the void.

Each member brings their own diverse and unique styles and tastes in music, but it is the guitar driven, drum pounding, bass thumping rock ‘n ‘ roll of the 60′s and 70′s that shines through in our original material.

While listening to Madra, one can expect to hear anything from Zepplinesque heavy rock to melodic music in the vein of The Beatles to songs with just a hint of good solid punk like the Ramones or a touch of the alternative, a la Bowie.

Madra have spent the past four years gigging as much and as hard as possible, in venues big and small, from Eamonn Doran’s & The Sugar Club, to Pravda, The Village and local festivals in Lucan & Leixlip. We believe that music can help people and society in many ways, and have played at various charity events for groups such as Focus Ireland and The Nagarhope charity.

We are constantly writing and refining our material, and it’s all getting better and better.

From our time gigging around Dublin, we’ve come to realise that there are two types of band, the one that stands and plays their songs with little to no recognition of the audience, and the type that we like to think we fall into, which is a band who go out there with great music (its gotta have a good pulse be loud & great live) and really up the tempo and get the place rocking.

Madra are:

Darragh Dalton – Drummer & Backing Vocals

Noel Gleeson    – Guitarist  & Lead Vocals.

Mark Phelan    – Bassist & Vocals.

Murder Plan – Inside Outsiders

Q1. Where are you from?

Bayside in Dublin

Q2. Musical influences?

Nick Cave, Tom Waits, the Beatles, Nina Simone

Q3. What’s your song writing process?

The music is generally written first and loosely arranged. We hen let it sit for about two weeks until one of us comes up with a theme. Once the theme has been decided we start experimenting with melodies and rough placeholder lyrics. Then we’ll go through about 6-10 drafts of the song, we’ll settle on that, here will be a few more rewrtes along he way and the song is done.

Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?

Playing in St Stephen’s Green shopping centre with the Soul Festival in 2008, there were kids lying on the floor looking at us with their grandparents – a surreal demographic cross-section of a crowd and a super gig, also the biggest venue we’ve ever played [it's probably bigger than the O2 in fact]

Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?

Any of the afore mentioned influences (even the dead ones) and Charlie Sheen, simply for the experience.

In their own words…

Murder Plan are a Dublin-based vaudeville blues band. Their sound can be described as a little bit chaos peppered with enchanting mania. With songs & styles encompassing rock, tangos, Balkan gypsy sounds, blues & jazz, they mix & match motifs like a drunken arsonist in a Parisian police line-up.

The band is made up of Stephanie O’ Keeffe (vocals), Dara Melinn (guitar), Steve Flynn (bass), Donal Melinn (drums) and Cathal Melinn (piano). None of the Melinns are related to each other and their coming together to form the band is a funny story that they sometimes recount at live shows, though it’s not something they reveal on a regular basis.

They’ve been playing together since May 2006 and still manage to hold down day-jobs in the Adult entertainment industry while rocking like crazed geologists throughout the night.

Their live performances tend to be classy, macabre affairs with a touch of humour and lots of energy for all to see. Roll up, roll up…

Mishaped Pearls – Benedizione

Q1. Where are you from?

London based, Manuela is from Germany and the rest of us are from all over England. Ged’s family were all born in Ireland, Sean’s dad is Irish!

Q2. Musical influences?

Right across the board – from Led Zeppelin to Maria Callas and Elbow to Anne Sofie Von Otter!

Q3. What’s your song writing process?

It differs but usually starts with a chord sequence or guitar riff, then melody, then lyrics, then structure.

Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?

Singer not realising the band were on stage ready to go and then having our stage time cut to just 3 songs. They didn’t have enough mics for us all and the p.a. was rubbish. We made the most of it though!

Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?

It would have be with anyone on Later With Jools. We were made for that show!!

In their own words

“Astonishing” Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music

The brainchild of guitarist and songwriter Ged Flood and classically-trained mezzo soprano Manuela Schuette, Mishaped Pearls’ sound is a unique contemporary blend of classical, folk and world music, inspired by the colourful world of the Baroque from where the group takes its name. (‘Misshapen pearl’ is a literal translation of the word ‘Baroque’.)

As well as being the silky voice of the group, Manuela draws on her love of ancient poetry by researching and providing most of the lyrics to the songs, which cross many countries, visiting France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and even Ancient China.  They are joined by five versatile musicians: Andrew  on keys, Amelie on bass, Sean on guitar, banjo and mandolin, Naomi on cello and Calie on hand drums and percussion.

Their reputation as an astonishing live band has grown in the last year, gaining recognition from Tom Robinson and Kelli Ali. It was also Tom Robinson who personally invited them to perform at the “BBC Introducing: Fresh On The Net Festival” at the Riverside Studios in London to celebrate and showcase the best acts from the last three years of his radio show.

In 2010 as well as appearing at The Southbank Royal Festival Hall and a number of music and folk festivals Mishaped Pearls toured The Auvergne in France to great reviews in the regional press and they have been asked to return to France to play a festival again this summer.

“Seeing Mishaped Pearls for the first time live at The Slaughtered Lamb, I was hypnotized by their poetry and beauty….their live shows are mesmerizing.” Kelli AliSpiral Earth Magazine

Nova Static – Saving The World

Q1. Where are you from?

All four members are currently living in Portlaoise, Co.Laois.

Q2. Musical influences?

Influences range from Husker Du, The Replacements, The Lemonheads to Bloc Party.

Q3. What’s your song writing process?

Daniel, our singer and guitarist, usually will come to ther band with a rough demo of a new song. From here we each individually pitch in our own ideas and we try them out. After much rehearsing a new song will then be played live a few times and we sometimes tweak it again until we’re happy with the final song.

Q4. Most bizarre gig experience?

There’s been many, one that comes to mind is performing onstage at Captain America’s on Grafton Street. Having to play at half volume to a restaraunt full of people eating was very strange. I doubt we’ll return.

Q5. If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be and why?

Personally when I was younger I always wanted to be the person Green Day pulled onstage during their shows to play a song with them. I was never picked unfortunately but would still like to share the stage with them. Speaking for the other members I’d guess they’d say The Replacements, Husker Du or maybe The Smiths.

In their own words

Dara Comerford (drums), Daniel Heffernan (guitar & vocals), Brian Scully (guitar) and Stephen wall (bass) got together in late 2006. Since then, countless gigs, hundreds of miles, hazy memories, lofty ambitions, new friends, mortal enemies, broken promises, shattered hearts, hibernation, inspiration, good times, bad times and things they can’t mention have shaped nova static into an eight legged pop-rock behemoth.

August saw the release of nova static’s self titled debut e.p…. four tracks of love, loss, piracy and possibly gay vampires; it demonstrates perfectly how the band harnesses an eclectic range of influences to create their own unique sound. the response to this release has been overwhelming, with Jackie Hayden of hot press recently selecting the disc as his “pick of the fortnight” in his first cuts column.

With (typically, unintentional) perfect timing, just a week before their e.p. became available, Nova Static were selected by Declan Forde of pod to perform at electric picnic 2010. The band are now playing as many shows as they can and intend to break through any proverbial doors, rather than get their foot in…

Nova Static have supported acts such as Little Comets, Killing Joke, The Coronas, Ham Sandwich, The Blizzards, Republic of Loose, The Immediate and many more…
